Intro to Art: Using SPACE to Create Stencils

  • Gain an understanding for the use of different styles of SPACE by altering what marks are present on a piece of paper.
  • Create a ONE COLOR stencil by using letters/numbers from an in class demonstration to make POSITIVE SPACE from NEGATIVE SPACE.

That’s a mouthful to type…

Anyways, we are going to start in with our first project (I know, it has been a long time coming), and start creating stencils much like the Banksy piece you see above.

REFLECTION QUESTION: Throughout this demonstration today, and the exercises today/tomorrow, I’d like you to think about what the term SPACE means to you, and the connection or relationship between POSITIVE and NEGATIVE SPACE you may have noticed.

Begining Acrylic Paint Techniques
  • Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes properly by setting up a successful palette and maintaining paintbrushes.
  • Apply media, techniques, and processes with sufficient skill, confidence, and sensitivity that their intentions are carried out in their artwork by blending various hues using the Highlight, Midtone, Shadow system demonstrated in class.

Today’s class will be a little strange to start out.  Before we start painting, I think it is a good idea to discuss with you how to setup your paint and your brushes so that you can be as successful as possible.

We will start work today with understanding what a MIDTONE is and how it relates to a highlight (getting lighter) and a shadow (getting darker) by painting simple shapes and forms together in a class demonstration.

Ceramics 2: Project Stamp

  1. STWBAT create artworks that use organizational principles and functions to solve specific visual arts problems.
  2. STW compare the materials, technologies, media, and processes of the visual arts with those of other arts disciplines as they are used in creation and types of analysis.

I’m going to use the same quote at the start of this week as I used towards the end of last to illustrate a point.


As of last Friday, each hour was working on an ACTION PLAN, which should be turned in before any work gets done.  That ACTION PLAN needs to have the following information present on it:


  1. Requirements of project
  2. Name and Deadline
  3. Steps that are need to complete
  4. Illustration and/or description of how the project is intended to look
