Intro to Art: Creating a Stencil With More Than 2 Colors

  • Understanding and applying media, techniques, and processes by using X-ACTO knives to create a 3-4 color stencil
  • Apply media, techniques, and processes with sufficient skill, confidence, and sensitivity that their intentions are carried out in their artworks by creating a multi-color stencil using steps that are demonstrated in class.

Last week we focused on the specifics with using SPACE (both POSITIVE and NEGATIVE) to create a stencil, and how to manipulate the cuts so that NEGATIVE space could/would stay within some designs.  Today, we are going to take a look at images that have multiple colors in them, and the specific layers that would be needed to create the image.

REFLECTION QUESTION: What types of things did you notice if you mix up the layers for your stencil?  Is/Was there a way to work yourself out of a mistake if you printed the wrong color or followed the wrong order?

Graphic Coms: Getting to Know Illustrator

  1.  EXPLORE the Illustrator workspace by familiarizing themselves with basic image creation functions.
  2. Use complete sentences when asking questions in class.


Students will familiarize themselves with preferences. They learn what available preferences there are and how to set them.

Along with setting and changing preferences, students will learn how to resize objects. Objects are individual pieces of artwork that they create, such as squares, text, or lines. Changing the size of an object is as easy as selecting the object they want resized and then clicking Show Bounding Box on the View menu. The eight handles that appear around the selected object can be dragged to change the object’s size and shape.

Adv. Drawing: Loomis Method of Portrait Drawing (cont.)

  1. DEMONSTRATE your level of comprehension for proportion and space involving the drawing of a face by practicing through a demonstration.
  2. IDENTIFY characteristics of portraiture drawing by labeling the correct terms within guided notes.


We will continue with the “Loomis Method” of drawing and observation of the head.  We will be working exclusively in our sketchbooks with guided notes and in-class demonstrations throughout the hour.  Over the course of the next few days, you will be asked to practice your skills both in and out of class by participating in various drawing activities which will help aid in the process of measuring and observing specific characteristics of the head when attempting a sketch.
