Intro to Art: Using SPACE to Create Stencils

  • Gain an understanding for the use of different styles of SPACE by altering what marks are present on a piece of paper.
  • Create a ONE COLOR stencil by using letters/numbers from an in-class demonstration to make POSITIVE SPACE from NEGATIVE SPACE.

That’s a mouthful to type…

Anyways, we are going to start in with our first project (I know, it has been a long time coming), and start creating stencils much like the Banksy piece you see above.

Today, we are gonna look at an incredibly important piece to the stencil making process, often overlooked when people start out making these on their own.  Use the files/link below to participate in today’s IN-CLASS assignment.

REFLECTION QUESTION: Throughout this demonstration today, and the exercises today/tomorrow, I’d like you to think about what the term SPACE means to you, and the connection or relationship between POSITIVE and NEGATIVE SPACE you may have noticed.

There are 7 letters in the English alphabet that would need to have “ISLANDS” add to their designs to have a working stencil.  Can you ID them all?

Adv. Drawing: Refining the Gesture Drawing Process

  1. APPLY  your ability to create a series of quick sketches from a model or pose by emphasizing the BODY of an image in 30 second BEAN drawings

Don’t forget about the ONLINE links for the downloadable materials that are covered in class.  This includes the weekly handout on specific Figure Drawing topics as well as our Weekly Pose Packets.
